Mookie: The Unexpected Joy
The year 2021 was a challenging one for many, but for me, it was particularly challenging. In the midst of the global pandemic, I was also battling prostate cancer, undergoing radiation treatments that left me both physically and emotionally drained. I hadn’t had a dog in nine years, and with my history of owning big dogs, the thought of getting another seemed distant. But fate, it seems, had other plans for me, and they came in the form of a small, furry bundle of joy named Mookie.
My dear friend, Hope Kinney, was the one who planted the seed. “You should get a dog,” she said, her voice filled with the conviction that only a true friend can have. I was skeptical at first, but Hope was persistent. She knew the healing power of a pet, especially during such trying times. Reluctantly, I agreed, and soon after, Mookie, a Shih Tzu with a personality as vibrant as his name, entered my life.

From the moment I brought him home, Mookie never left my side. It was as if he sensed my need for companionship and support. Remarkably, he was house trained in 2 weeks, a testament to his intelligence and our immediate bond. We quickly became inseparable, best friends navigating the uncertainty of the pandemic and my treatment together.
As the world slowly began to recover from the clutches of COVID-19, Mookie and I started venturing out to meet friends. It was during these outings that Mookie’s star began to shine. Our favorite outdoor haunts, The Swordfish Grill & Cortez Kitchen in Cortez, Florida, and Clancy’s Irish Pub in Bradenton, Florida, became the stages for his newfound celebrity status. Whenever we walked in, the chorus of greetings was always the same: “Hi Mookie, how are you Mookie?” I had become an afterthought, but I didn’t mind one bit. Watching him bring joy to others was the best part of my day.
Mookie quickly became the heart and soul of our social circle. His friendly nature and wagging tail were impossible to resist. He had a particular fondness for the bartenders who, without fail, would sneak him pieces of bacon. It was our little secret, a special treat that made Mookie’s eyes light up with joy. And it wasn’t just the locals who fell in love with him. Mookie had a unique talent for making friends with people from all over the world. His charm transcended language barriers, and he entertained and brought smiles to thousands.

One of the most surprising aspects of Mookie’s life is his knack for travel. For a little dog, he has a big adventurous spirit. Over the past few years, Mookie has flown over 50 times, accompanying me on trips across the country. Each journey added another layer to our bond, and Mookie handled every flight with the grace and calm of a seasoned traveler.
Life with Mookie has been nothing short of extraordinary. He came into my life at a time when I needed him most, providing comfort and companionship during some of my difficult days. As we moved past the challenges of the pandemic and my cancer treatment, Mookie became not just a pet, but a symbol of resilience and joy.
Now, as we walk into our favorite spots, the greeting is always the same, and I smile every time. It’s all about Mookie, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. He’s not just my dog; he’s my best friend, my travel companion, and my constant source of happiness. For those who know the unconditional love of a dog, you understand exactly what I mean. Mookie has been a blessing in more ways than I could have ever imagined, and I am grateful for every moment we share.
I would love to hear stories from our readers about their pets.
