From Rosie the Robot to ChatGPT: The Jetsons’ Future Is Finally Here on the Florida Suncoast

| Jodi Schwarzenbach |

For those who remember, The Jetsons was an animated series in the late 60s, early 70s, where we got our first introduction to having a personal robotic assistant, lovingly named Rosie.  Rosie did all of the things for the Jetsons, not because they were wealthier than their other new age neighbors; it was just what the future was supposed to look like for everyone. Rosie would not only do the physical labor like a maid does, but she also planned all the parties, did the shopping, and was a walking encyclopedia of helpful knowledge.  The Jetsons relied heavily on Rosie to be their thinking partner.

Fast forward to today, and many of us are feeling like never in our wildest dreams would we have a Rosie at our hands.  Albeit we still wash our own dishes (well, there are dishwashers), do our own laundry (actually, we throw it in a washing machine and come back like an hour later), and cook (air fryers, microwaves, and ovens).  Even our surgeons perform several procedures, all with the help of robotics.  Today, you can even see a robot roaming the streets of Sarasota.  Long-known for its arts and live music, Sarasota going viral for a robot out and about was both unusual and timely.

ChatGPT

Does this new future include a personal assistant available for each of us?  The answer is a resounding “Yes” for those of us utilizing AI every day.  It has made researching and ticking off to-do lists easier than ever.  And finally, the dream to finding more minutes in a day has come true.

I use ChatGPT several times a week. https://chatgpt.com/.  What started as a classroom helper in preparing curriculums and personalizing plans for students a few years ago quickly evolved into at-home assistance.  Rather than using apps and search engines to find great prices on hotels, airline fares, and travel plans, it is so easy to pop in your exact budget, destination, and all the particulars, and ChatGPT will direct you to finalizing your plans with ease.  It really is one-stop-shopping, somehow easier than shooting an arrow at an array of travel apps that all seem the same.

Recently, I created simple but professional resumes for a couple of people, utilizing their personal information and letting ChatGPT formulate a polished, finished document.  What I love is that simple changes can be made with clear directives like “add address for this company.”  ChatGPT will look up the address and insert for you.  Now that is just too easy for anyone who has compiled resume information before. https://chatgpt.com/g/g-hiVeyDDpv-resume?locale=en-US.

Not too long ago, I asked ChatGPT to formulate an eating plan to help me lose 10 pounds in 21 days, adding in only exercises I would do and helping me to stay on track with easy meal plans.  So far, I am on track to reach my goal.  The bonus is that ChatGPT lets you save the plan and come back to it with any modifications you might want.  You do have to create an account to save items, but that feature is free.

My husband and I also let ChatGPT create a budget for us, and though we tried to be detailed with our monthly expenditures, it reminded us of a few items that are generally forgotten when people make budgets.  It has been incredibly accurate in helping us see where our money goes and offering suggestions to cut costs and save more each month.

What are you using ChatGPT for?  The options are endless. Whether you are on board with AI or feel it is consequential, this is the age we are in.  Rightly so, people can be very hesitant to share information with AI for all the legitimate concerns. But also, letting AI become your personal assistant like Rosie in The Jetsons is super cool.  Personal spacecraft coming soon, I am sure.
