Since 1973 Sarasota has been blessed to have a premiere contemporary theatre…the Florida Studio Theatre. Offering world-class stage entertainment is just a fraction of what they’re about. Florida Studio Theatre is a Sarasota jewel.
Theatre guests come from cities throughout the country, as well as major metropolitan areas like New York and Chicago who know good theatre and FST’s standard of excellence has become the hallmark of the theatre.
Florida Studio Theatre also offers classes for youth and adults in acting, musical theatre, playwriting and improv in 8-week sessions. Kate Alexander, Artistic Director, created a comprehensive theatre education program with a specific methodology of training acting for students of all ages at FST. The program was launched in 1982 with 11 students and now draws nearly 1000 children and adults from throughout the region each year.
Florida Studio Theatre has for the past 29 years offered a workshop entitled ‘Write a Play’ as an arts-in-education initiative designed to inspire youth to write plays. Students are encouraged to write from their own point of view, and in doing so they create a diverse group of plays. Since the program’s launch, more than one million kindergarten through 12th grade students from Sarasota, throughout the nation and around the world have participated in the in-school program.
Other popular programs offered include the Children’s Theatre where children can enjoy a show for only $5 each. After the show children get to meet the cast and ask questions about the performance.
5 different venues
Each of the Theatre’s venues offer a cozy, intimate atmosphere to enjoy your show. The Gompertz Theatre (237 seats), the Keating Theatre (173 seats), the John C. Court Cabaret (100 seats), the Goldstein Cabaret (100 seats), and the Bowne’s Lab Theatre (100 seats). The variety of entertainment offered at these 5 theatres is second-to-none and something-for-everybody!
Florida Studio Theatre has grown to 30,000 subscribers a year, the third largest subscription theatre in the nation…Sarasota’s jewel.
