Lake Sheila NC Cottage

A Hidden Gem; Pristine Lake Sheila in Saluda, N.C.

| Julie Hall |

If you like to swim in clear, clean lake water, or kayak alongside your best friend. Or maybe you love to fish, or simply enjoy laying on a dock on the shores of a pristine lake. Then you have found your mountain-lake-haven at Lake Sheila.

Summer on Lake Sheila

Make plans today to spend a glorious Summer weekend or week on Lake Sheila in Saluda, NC. As you explore the area, the History of Saluda in the downtown District, or a day at The Gorge on the Zipline Canopy for the adventurer in you, you will fall in love with this little gem of a mountain town.

You just may be ready for an escape to nature by now?! There is nothing quite as peaceful as gently paddling around a small clear water lake, listening to the birds, and breathing in the fresh mountain air. After a paddle around the lake, sunbathe on one of the docks or take a dip in the water.

A short walk back to your vacation home to enjoy an outside shower with the sunbeams coming in on you, a private yet invigorating experience. Then it is time to join your group on the sprawling open deck in comfortable padded deck chairs for a sip of Biltmore wine or perhaps a local craft beer. What a glorious spot to share stories and rekindle your love with friends and family.

After your day exploring the shores and waters of the lake, head into town, especially if you are a bit of a history buff! Historic Saluda, Est. 1881, will be a treat for you! Here is a link to the history of the town. It’s absolutely true, the downtown district has truly kept the look and feel of the beginning days of this mountain town.

From the Saluda, NC Historic District Site

In many ways, Saluda’s one-street downtown hasn’t changed much since it was founded in 1881. Although the train no longer runs through town, people still come from many places seeking a quieter lifestyle, one reminiscent of America’s past . The vintage buildings are now occupied by shops, galleries, and restaurants, giving the town a quaint rustic feel but with a modern flair. Most buildings on Main Street were added to the National Register of Historic places in 1996, based on the district’s unique historic and architectural character.
