A Day of Discovery at Mote Aquarium: Why Charlee & Nova Loved Exploring Sarasota’s Ocean World

Charlee and Nova explore sharks, manatees, sea turtles, and touch tanks during a memorable family visit to Mote Aquarium in Sarasota.

A couple of weeks ago, we packed the day with excitement, curiosity, and a whole lot of smiles and headed to Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium with the girls—Charlee and Nova—along with “Gammy Leesa” and close friend, Val. From the moment we walked through the doors, it was clear this wasn’t going to be just another outing. It was going to be one of those days that sticks with you.

The girls were instantly drawn into the world beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. Their first stop was the shark habitat, where sleek blacktip and nurse sharks glided effortlessly through the water. Charlee stood transfixed, watching their fins cut through the tank, while Nova peppered us with questions about how sharks breathe and why they keep swimming. It was learning disguised as wonder.

Just around the corner, the mood softened at the manatee exhibit. These gentle giants floated peacefully, and the girls couldn’t stop smiling as they followed every slow, graceful movement. We shared stories about how manatees are protected in Florida, turning the exhibit into a heartfelt lesson about conservation and kindness to animals.

The sea turtle rehabilitation area was another highlight. Seeing turtles that had been rescued and were on their way to recovery sparked a lot of empathy. Charlee was especially touched, asking how people could help keep the oceans cleaner so turtles wouldn’t get hurt. It was one of those moments where you realize just how powerful experiences like this can be for young hearts.

Of course, no visit to Mote is complete without time at the touch tanks. Nova’s face lit up as she gently touched a stingray for the first time, while Charlee carefully explored starfish and horseshoe crabs. The hands-on experience made everything feel real and unforgettable.

We wrapped up our visit wandering through colorful reef fish exhibits and playful seahorse displays, soaking in the calm, magical atmosphere that Mote does so well. By the time we left, the girls were tired—but happy, inspired, and full of stories to tell.

It wasn’t just a trip to an aquarium. It was a shared memory, a day of discovery, and a reminder of how special places like Mote are for connecting families, learning about our oceans, and inspiring the next generation to care deeply about the world around them.
