WSLR Celebrates its 15thAnniversary with an Open House on Friday

| Laura Bell Adams |

To celebrate its 15thAnniversary on the air, WSLR will hold an Open House at their studio and performance space on Friday, February 21 from 10am -12pm. The event is free and open to the whole community. There will be staff-led tours of the studios on the half hour and light refreshments will be served. WSLR is located at 525 Kumquat Court in the Rosemary District.

WSLR, Inc. was formed in 2004 to govern the operation of a 100 watt low-power, non-commercial community radio station. This new kind of radio was created during the Clinton Administration to try to combat media consolidation and bring localism back to the radio dial. WSLR 96.5 LPFM began broadcasting in August 2005 thanks to the hard work of a small group of dedicated volunteers. In addition to listening to WSLR at 96.5 on the FM dial, anyone can live stream programming at wslr.org.

WSLR is a Pacifica affiliate. In alignment with the original purpose of Pacifica stations, WSLR’s programming promotes peace, social and economic justice, democracy and sustainability and presents voices often neglected by the mainstream. We embrace diversity and freedom of expression. The Pacifica Affiliate network includes approximately 200 independent radio stations, primarily in the United States…but there are also affiliates in Canada, Europe, and Africa.

WSLR is more than radio. Community events also serve as a public extension of our programming and mission. Through the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, WSLR produces over 60 live concerts a year, hosts over 35 educational events, and provides low-cost space to like-minded non-profit organizations. Together WSLR+Fogartyville celebrate and promote the creative, cultural and political vitality of the local community.
