SP: Please tell us about The Gay Events Guy and how you got started putting your own magical spin on everyday events.
GEG: The Gay Events Guy came into fruition from my time being a special events director for a non-profit business. During my time there, I found a love of connecting clients with fabulous current ideas and vendors for their special days utilizing their unique vision and event vibes. I saw clients struggle to connect with local talent who could make their dreams a reality due to the constant stream of information they were getting through social media. Utilizing my online, interactive planning tool called, The Gay Events Guy’s Guide, I allow clients to feel in control of their party collaborating with myself tackling all those pesky details of planning an event with my guidance and special eye for events. The unique concept of The Gay Events Guy is that I am not there day of running the show, however my clients choose who they want to run it, and I train that person on how to be successful come event day. This allows me to keep my fees lower than the typical party planner allowing me to work with clients with MOST any budget to make their event sparkle with success because EVERYONE deserves that!
SP: What was the best party or event that you have attended and why?
GEG: I am blessed to have planned and attended some fabulous parties in my life. However, I have to say the best party I ever attended would be my best friend’s bachelorette party. It was so fun because we snuck away to Arizona for a weekend and everyone in the party had a chance to plan a portion of it. Each day was filled with a new adventure that showed how my best friend’s other friends saw her and how their relationships impacted on our daily outings. I will say I enjoyed my planned day best (I am biased as a fabulous planner). For my night, I transformed the backyard of the Air B&B into an informal dinner party. We all got dressed up in our finest outfits and had a private chef come and teach us how to make inspired cocktails followed by a delicious, coursed dinner with drink pairings. The night went on with laughter, games, dancing, and oh yes, a stripper, but we don’t have to talk about that. All the gals complimented how crazy it was that I could use the things around the rental to create such a fun and elevated night.
SP: What types of events do you facilitate? What are some of your favorite venues in the area? What types of additions will you add to your event planning to turn someone’s special occasion from ordinary to extraordinary?
GEG: The Gay Events Guy is open to celebrate any of life’s major events in my clients’ lives. From baby showers to weddings to celebrations of life, there is no event that this gay is afraid to tackle. I want my clients for life and want to facilitate their wildest event fantasies. With this in mind, there are so many venues in our local area that can match any type of vibe that my clients may have. From the old city life feel of The Urban Loft at Manatee Central, Facebook to the breathtaking modern vibe of the Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa Museum of Art | Exhibitions and Art Classes to the peaceful outdoor nature look at The Retreat Sarasota, Home – Restaurant & Boutique Hotel in Sarasota Florida there are so many gorgeous and innovative venues to celebrate at in our backyard. Once we have the venue set this is where I really get to turn my client’s special occasion from ordinary to extraordinary simply by getting to know my client. This may seem intuitive to most however taking the time to really dive into my clients as people not just as paying customers gives me the edge over my competition because I am not simply churning out another event without thinking. Every element of an event planned by The Gay Events Guy, will have intention behind it lending to an unforgettable event that will be talked about and remembered for ages.
SP: What considerations should people take into account when hiring a party planner? They want to get the most bang for their money while checking all the major party boxes and adding personalized surprises along the way, too. How does all of this even happen without a party planner?
GEG: There are so many special considerations for the public to think about when hiring a party planner to ensure a fun and stress-free event, no matter budgeting concerns. One of the biggest misconceptions most clients have is the cost of a planner. When budgeting for an event where you may want a planner, it is important to remember that most planners will cost around 5-20% of your total event budget. This may seem like a huge chunk of change, however for a great planner this is the investment that will lead you to stress free planning. Once you settle your budget and know how much you can spend on a planner, it is important to do your research on prospective planners. Check out their website and social media to view their galleries of past events to ensure that their vibe and vision matches yours, so they complement and not overshadow each other. Planning is all about collaboration, so you want to ensure the person you hire is someone you vibe with personally and professionally.
