Suncoast Science Center Mobilizes Community to Save Lives

| Jenn Sams |

What: Community Blood Drive hosted by the Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab (SSC) Lab in partnership with SunCoast Blood Centers (SCBC).  The two organizations have partnered to host a blood drive and address urgent blood and platelet deficiencies in the area. All successful blood donations made at the drive will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies at no charge. Donors will also receive a student-designed memento created using high-tech Fab Lab equipment and tour the Fab Lab.

Over 60 donors are currently signed up to give blood, an astounding number from the average blood drive of 10-12 donors. Photo, Video, and Interview Opportunities with Suncoast Science Center and SunCoast Blood Centers staff, blood donors, and student volunteers available throughout the day.

Blood donation appointments can be made online by visiting HERE or by calling 1-866-97-BLOOD.

Who: Anyone age 16 and over who is in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds is eligible to give blood. Additional requirements can be found at https://www.scbb.org/donor-information/faqs.html.

Why: As a not-for-profit community organization seeking to continue its innovative support of local citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic, SSC has teamed up with SCBC to help fill local blood deficiencies. New blood and plasma donations are much needed at this time to support critically ill COVID patients as well those who are suffering traumas, going through cancer treatment as well as having major surgery.

When: Wednesday, July 29, 2020 from 11:00am-4:00pm

Whole Blood donation appointments take approximately 30 minutes. Double Red Cell donations take approximately one hour.
