St. Patrick’s Day Fun Along the Suncoast

| Jodi Schwarzenbach |

Anyone else ready for some luck of the Irish or a spunky leprechaun sprinkling some magic in the air?  Sometimes all the things that test you happen in quick succession.  Everywhere you look there are people who feel as if they have lived all of 2025’s twelve months in just these past 60 some days.  Perhaps St. Patrick’s Day’s strategic placement within the annual calendar is meant to bring good luck to those who had a rough beginning to any new year.  (Not the case, but more on that below). All we know is that whatever is to come needs to have some good juju mixed in.

It has come to pass, that St. Patrick’s Day is a time to count our lucky blessings, drink green beer, hang with some chums, and top it off with a fine meal of corned beef and cabbage.  Growing up in the North, this particular meal marked the post midpoint of winter, when frosty snows mostly gave way to freezing rain and a hope for Spring.  Afterall, the primary color of St. Paddy’s Day is green, the color of things that grow and flourish when the sun is bright.

Why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

Not being Irish, it always felt like coat-tailing on someone else’s special day.  As it turns out, St. Patty’s Day is for everyone.  Originally designated as a day of celebration of St. Patrick, credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, the very first St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually celebrated here in St. Augustine, Fl in the 1600s.  From there it has evolved to an all-inclusive party event with parades, Irish dancing, corned beef, and of course, green beer.  And though we may not turn our rivers green as they do in Chicago, we do love to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day along the Suncoast.  .
