Sarasota & Manatee Cyclists Unite for 2026 Ride of Silence to Honor Fallen Riders and Promote Road Safety
Cyclists from across the Florida Suncoast will gather in Sarasota on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, for the 24th Annual Ride of Silence, an international event dedicated to honoring bicyclists who have been injured or killed on public roadways while also promoting safer streets for everyone.
The local ride, serving both Manatee and Sarasota counties, begins at 7 p.m. from the southwest parking lot at Robarts Arena. Riders are encouraged to arrive by 6:45 p.m.
The event is free and open to all cyclists. It follows a busy season of local cycling awareness, including Florida Bicycle Month activities across Sarasota and Manatee counties.
A Powerful Silent Tribute on Sarasota Streets
Unlike traditional cycling events, the Ride of Silence is conducted in near-total silence. Participants ride slowly — no faster than 12 mph — while wearing helmets and obeying all traffic laws. Sarasota police officers will escort the procession through city streets.
The purpose of the ride is simple but deeply meaningful:
- Honor cyclists who have been injured or killed.
- Raise awareness that bicycles legally share public roads.
- Encourage drivers and cyclists to safely “Share the Road.”
The annual event carries added emotional weight this year. Organizers say seven cyclists were killed in Manatee and Sarasota counties during 2025, with five more fatalities already reported in 2026.
The ride is intended to remind motorists, law enforcement officials, and community leaders that cyclists are vulnerable road users who deserve visibility, protection, and respect.
A Global Movement That Started with Tragedy
The Ride of Silence began in 2003 in Dallas, Texas, after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was struck and killed by the mirror of a passing bus. The first ride was organized by cycling advocate Chris Phelan and quickly grew into an international movement.
Today, Ride of Silence events are held in hundreds of cities worldwide during National Bike Month each May.
Cyclists participating in the Sarasota event will join riders across the globe in a shared mission to improve roadway awareness and reduce preventable tragedies.
Florida Continues to Face Bicycle Safety Challenges
Florida consistently ranks among the most dangerous states in the nation for bicyclists and pedestrians. According to traffic safety studies and Florida Highway Safety data, the state records hundreds of serious bicycle crashes every year.
The Sarasota-Bradenton region’s growing population, busy tourism corridors, seasonal traffic, and expanding road construction projects have intensified concerns among local cyclists and safety advocates. Recent reporting on Florida counties considered dangerous for cyclists has kept the issue in front of local readers.
Cycling organizations throughout the Suncoast continue pushing for:
- More protected bike lanes.
- Better roadway lighting.
- Enhanced driver education.
- Safer intersection designs.
- Stronger enforcement of distracted driving laws.
What Participants Should Know
Riders planning to attend are encouraged to:
- Wear a helmet.
- Bring bicycle lights and reflective gear.
- Arrive early for staging.
- Ride respectfully and remain silent during the event.
- Follow all directions from police escorts and volunteers.
The event welcomes cyclists of all ages and skill levels.
