Timaeus and the Nations by Tammy Nguyen – October 9 at 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy an immersive look into the Timaeus and the Nations exhibition by Tammy Nguyen, a renowned multimedia artist with works displayed across the globe. The body of work explores themes of world order, nationhood and the boundaries of national identity. Influenced by Plato’s dialogue Timaeus and the global maritime practice of “Flags of Convenience”, where merchant vessels register in one country but fly the flag of another for regulatory benefits. Nguyen utilizes this lens to illuminate the creation and destruction of national identity and the pursuit of an elegant world order in the 21st century. The paintings depict a spectrum of leadership figures, ranging from statesman to pirates, and investigate the concept of Demiurge, the divine craftsman in Timaeus who, with mathematics, reason and faith, created the cosmos, physical world and its beings. Anchored by her striking artist book 2:4:8, handcrafted from the sewing pattern of a vintage naval uniform and designed to open in three ways, and accompanied by her 23 embroidered tapestries from the colors and flags of 46 participating nations, the exhibit highlights profound and philosophical questioning of world order, leadership, nationhood and the arbitrary construction of national identity through symbols.

Chromatic Blush by Claire Ashley – November 6 at 5:30 p.m.

Combine stunning art, delectable dishes and great company for a night at the museum to remember at the Sarasota Art Museum’s Pop-Up Night November 6 at 6:30pm! Starting with an optional gallery tour at 5:30pm, enjoy an immersive look into the Chromatic Blush exhibition by Claire Ashley, a Scottish-born, Chicago-based artist with works displayed across the globe. Visitors can expect lumpy, colorful and unconventional inflatables that challenge conventional notions of taste, beauty, and fine art. Mirroring the human body’s contrasting states of tension and release, inhaling and exhaling, the sculptures are a metaphor for our own physical existence. The good-humored and accessible work by Ashely defies traditional categorizations and melds life and art in a playful way while also provocatively questioning cultural norms. Ashley invites viewers to be transported to her imagined evolutionary moment in a future where hybrid organisms roam, with the bizarre and voluminous installations accompanied by an evocative soundscape composed by her frequent collaborator, Joshua Patterson for a truly immersive experience prompting viewers to ask themselves what it means to truly be alive in an ever-evolving world.
