Row for the Cure Event in Sarasota-Bradenton Gets a Makeover

To make an even greater impact in the fight against breast cancer, the local organizing committee for the 2017 World Rowing Championships is adding a series of new events to its Row for the Cure initiative.

On Friday, September 22, the 2017 World Rowing Championships will partner with Macy’s at the Mall at University Town Center in Sarasota for a fashion show beginning at 6:00 p.m. The fashion show will feature youth and collegiate rowers on the catwalk from clubs in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Attendees are encouraged to make a $10 donation to Susan G. Komen, the largest breast cancer organization in the United States. In exchange for the $10 contribution, Macy’s will supply each donor with a $10 Macy’s gift card.

On Sunday, October 1, the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the final day of competition at the 2017 World Rowing Championships, the local organizing committee will host a Row for the Cure Erg-a-Thon at the Nathan Benderson Park Fan Fest. Using stationary rowing machines on land, the event requires no previous rowing experience. Proceeds from the event will also benefit Susan G. Komen. The Erg-a-Thon replaces a previous planned on-water event, which would have featured dragon boats, kayaks and rowing shells.

“By hosting an event that anyone and everyone can participate in, such as the Erg-a-Thon, it allows us to deal breast cancer a more serious blow,” said Meredith Scerba, the executive director of the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

In addition, the 2017 World Rowing Championships has dedicated its Fan Expo Area on October 1, to highlight a Health and Wellness theme, with vendors on-site dedicated to helping the community stay happy and healthy. Some entertainment on stage will include a Breast Cancer Survivor Fashion Show and demonstrations by Nathan Benderson Park’s Dragon Boat team—The Survivors in Sync.

Finally, that evening, the Mall at University Town Center will light up pink in honor of the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

ABOUT THE 2017 WORLD ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

From September 23 – October 1, 2017, the World Rowing Championships, an international rowing regatta organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation), will be held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida, the only Grade A course in the United States and “where world-class athletes come to compete.” In the 48 years of the event’s existence, the United States has hosted only one other World Championships, in 1994 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

This weeklong event is held at the end of the northern hemisphere summer. In non-Olympic years, it is the highlight of the international rowing calendar. Rowing takes place in 21 different boat classes for both men and women.

Our goal is to attract athletes, family, friends and fans from around the United States and the world, to attend this world-class event, and grow the following of rowing in the US.
