Registration Now Open for Fab Lab Remote Control Car Competition
Registration is now open for the Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab’s 8th annual remote control car competition, the RC Custom Car Open. Students from Kindergarten to 8th grade are invited to register for the program in teams of 2-4 students. Beginning late January, teams can sign up for weekend workshops that teach them how to use the Fab Lab’s high-tech machinery to customize their remote control car. The customization and learning opportunities are endless, from 3D printing new wheels to vacuum forming a custom car body to vinyl cutting a team logo sticker! The program culminates with a design competition on March 31 and an epic two-track race day competition on April 1. Winners receive cash prizes, scholarships and custom awards made at the Fab Lab. Most importantly, racers build creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills while having fun and making new friends in a safe and supportive environment.

Now in its 8th year, the RC Car competition is a premier, one-of-a-kind community event that sells out quickly. Interested parties are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. A $150 registration fee per team includes the car and accessories, 8 weeks of hands on workshops and two months of membership to the Fab Lab for each team member.

In usual Fab Lab fashion, the RC Car competition is designed and led by a team of passionate high school students. With support from staff and mentors, the student committee selects the theme, designs the logo, medals, and trophies, leads workshops, envisions and builds two racetracks, and runs race day logistics. The real-world learning experience allows the committee to build leadership and life skills while fostering a unique peer-to-peer learning environment where meaningful relationships among volunteers and racers are fostered.
