Pulitzer and Tony Winner Doug Wright to Present at Hermitage Artist Retreat
The Hermitage Artist Retreat is set to host an engaging program titled “The PlayWRIGHT’s the Thing,” featuring esteemed playwright and Hermitage Fellow Doug Wright. Scheduled for Monday, February 10, at 6 p.m., the event will take place at the Asolo Repertory Theatre’s Cook Theatre within the FSU Center for Performing Arts. Attendees will experience a conversation between Wright and Hermitage Artistic Director Andy Sandberg, complemented by performances of selections from Wright’s original works by talented Sarasota artists.
Doug Wright, a distinguished figure in American theater, has an impressive repertoire that includes the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play “I Am My Own Wife,” as well as notable works like “Grey Gardens,” “Hands on a Hardbody,” “War Paint,” and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” His recent play, “Good Night, Oscar,” which earned critical acclaim during its Broadway run, is slated for its regional premiere at Asolo Repertory Theatre from April 4 to April 26, 2025. The production will be directed by Peter Amster.
The Hermitage Artist Retreat, located on a nine-acre campus in Manasota Key, Sarasota County, is dedicated to supporting artists across various disciplines, including theater, music, visual art, and literature. The retreat offers multi-week residencies to accomplished artists, fostering the creation of new and impactful works. Beyond providing a creative haven, the Hermitage is committed to historic preservation, ecological restoration, and community engagement, enriching the cultural landscape of the region.
Doug Wright’s association with the Hermitage is longstanding; he is not only an alumnus but also serves as a trustee. In 2021, he contributed as a juror for the inaugural Hermitage Major Theater Award, further cementing his active involvement in the Hermitage community.
