Kids Can Have a Blast at Virtual Summer Camp 2020

| Desireé Schell |

Looking for a safe yet exciting summer camp experience 2020? Desireé Schell of Oval Penny’s Alchemist Publishing Club, and Kim Kassin from Science Scope bring you the coolest camp in town!

Desireé and Kim have adapted to the current situation by transitioning their physical summer camp to virtual; by offering take home supplies to accompany their various offerings this summer, they turn your living room or kitchen into a summer camp! They offer many unique options that support the camper’s S.T.E.A.M. needs, along with his or her family.

Campers can choose from 8 individual camps, representing the various aspects of this unique S.T.E.A.M. Summer Camp 2020! Check out weekly offerings at ScienceScopeKids.com!

Desireé Schell

Desireé Schell, a long-time middle school English Language Arts Teacher at Pine View School, noticed the talent flowing onto her desk every day. She realized her students’ great writing potential, and what started with an idea became a popular out-of-school activity. Pub Club, known in its entirety as Oval Penny’s Alchemist’s Publishing Club, began in late July of 2019.

Each day of the week, members would meet with Desiree at a local Starbucks café. Every student brought some sort of writing project: whether it was a full-on novel or a series of short stories, poetry and how-to books, everyone had an idea they were putting into action. The sessions simply involved sitting down to focus on one’s own project. There was no filter and no specific format.

Desireé wanted the kids to experience the freedom of creativity through writing, and her goal was to not limit the students’ talents through guidelines and word counts.

Pub Club

Newly added, Pub Club sessions in our S.T.E.A.M. Summer Camp for more experienced writers will include the study of famous authors through the webinar interface of Masterclass sessions.

Our younger students will have the opportunity to create a book using the
Storyjumper platform, a self-publishing online site. In both cases, campers are provided with Quandary Cards which put them into a specific situation of peril! If they write their way out of the problem by Friday, awards are earned!

Kim Kassin

Kim Kassin, a former life science teacher, created Science Scope to share her love of science with many students and loves the reactions she gets when entertaining and educating students on various science concepts! Campers will learn such things as STEM magic to learn about chemistry, H20, force and motion, bubble science, and electricity. STEMology allows learners to research animal biology and behavior. Registered campers will
be growing worms, butterflies and chickens via live web cam!

S.T.E.A.M.

science june 2019

Oval Penny’s Alchemist’s Pub Club and Science Scope will be two of the focused offerings at the S.T.E.A.M. Summer Camp 2020. This camp was created with kids in mind, allowing for weekly choice of classes. Students who have an interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.), will really enjoy the choice of experiences offered at this camp. While Desireé is creating story books with the campers, Kim will be sharing her passion for learning science! Science Scope will have the students oohing and ahh-ing during setting off gushing geysers, creating homemade lava lamps (totally groovy) and experimenting with UV sensitive beads and so much more!

Singing & songwriting

Fortune smiles upon the S.T.E.A.M. Summer Camp 2020 as we are thrilled to announce Twinkle Schascle Yochim as our Rock Star 101, Singing and Songwriting Coach for campers. Twinkle is a home-grown recording artist and lead singer here on the Gulf Coast with Twinkle and Rock Soul Radio. In her life she has worked with Warner/Reprise, EMI/Fame and Spirit Ranch to name a few and has performed with great artists such as Aerosmith, Rod Stewart and Dickey Betts. Here and now, she has agreed to work with your campers singing and songwriting desires. This experience is unequaled by the authenticity, experience and the talent that Twinkle brings with her, not to mention her love of community and children, alike.

Musical Theater Dance & Performance

S.T.E.A.M. Camp’s star-studded offerings don’t end there! Jamie Molina will excitedly be coaching Musical Theater Dance and Performance for campers. Jamie has performed in New York, Boston, Ohio, Texas and Florida where she currently resides. She has taught theatre workshops and vocal lessons for Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota and in the Gershwin Vocal Studio in Barcelona, Spain and will now be coaching for the S.T.E.A.M. Summer Camp 2020! Campers will work together to perform entire musicals. Group dance numbers to perform collectively as an ensemble will be part of the joy of Miss Jamie’s camp. Over the course of 3 weeks, the kids will also learn individual solos/duets, and will have a full-length performance by camp’s end, via Zoom. This class is perfect if you love to sing, dance, and act.

A Load of Code

Katherine Kourapis (Dr. K.) brings you A Load of Code – Level I! Dr. K. shares educational tools like Scratch, Code.org, Minecraft, and Python to teach and inspire kids to continue exploring Computer Science, programming and robotics in the future! Nikki Pietryka brings you A Load of Code – Level II! There is great satisfaction in telling a computer what to do and getting it to do so through trial and error (debugging), while persevering through to triumph! From phone apps to robots to self-driving cad software is what makes it work. Learning how to code may lead you to develop the next big thing! In A Load of Code-Levels I & II, campers will be engaged in critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity!

Sculpt a Cartoon Creature

Gail Bruder-Werner (B.W.) brings you Fun, Easy, Digital! Sculpt a Cartoon Creature! BW works with kids because she loves to introduce, excite, and inspire all ages of students to learn new ways of seeing their world, through use of all media. BW has chosen to share her knowledge through the S.T.E.A.M. Summer Camp so, “I can express my love of sharing and inspiring students to learn new ways to build confidence using S.T.E.A.M. to express themselves.” Exploring new ways that technology can be a resource is great fun in itself! Let’s learn to imagine and sculpt digitally, without getting your hands dirty!

Let’s Move, Yoga

Cristina Gonzalez will be providing awesome movement through yoga and more in her camp called Let’s Move! She has taught dance to youth since 1996 and yoga classes since 2004. Her experience and excitement to connect learners to their bodies through the power of their minds and imaginations – that moving can be FUN and no one needs to be perfect—is exactly why kids flourish under Ms. Gonzalez’s guidance.
