| Suncoast Post Staff |

St. Patrick’s Day is almost here, which means it’s time to break out the green, embrace the Irish spirit, and celebrate with parades, music, and maybe even a pint of Guinness! Whether you’re Irish by birth or just Irish for the day, St. Patrick’s Day is all about good vibes, festive fun, and a little bit of luck.

The History of St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated every year on March 17, honors Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders as a teenager and taken to Ireland as a slave. After escaping and later becoming a priest, he returned to Ireland to spread Christianity.

Legend has it that St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover (shamrock) to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. He is also credited with driving the snakes out of Ireland—though scientists say Ireland never actually had snakes! The first St. Patrick’s Day parade didn’t happen in Ireland but in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1601, proving that Floridians have been celebrating Irish culture for centuries.

Fun St. Patrick’s Day Facts

  • It Wasn’t Always About Green! The original color associated with St. Patrick was blue. The shift to green happened in the 18th century, partly due to Ireland’s nickname, “The Emerald Isle.”
  • The Chicago River Goes Green – Every year since 1962, Chicago dyes its river bright green for the holiday. The dye is eco-friendly and lasts for about five hours!
  • Guinness is King – On St. Patrick’s Day, over 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed worldwide. That’s double the usual daily amount!
  • The Biggest St. Paddy’s Day Party? Surprisingly, New York City holds the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world, with over 2 million spectators!
  • Corned Beef & Cabbage? While this dish is a staple of St. Patrick’s Day feasts in America, traditional Irish fare includes lamb stew and soda bread instead!
