Arts Advocates May 2026 Events in Sarasota: Scholarships, Van Wezel Tour & Artist Talks
Arts Advocates is set to deliver a vibrant lineup of cultural events throughout May 2026, highlighted by its annual scholarship awards luncheon, engaging artist programs, and exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences. The month’s schedule reflects the organization’s ongoing mission to support local artists, preserve Sarasota’s artistic heritage, and invest in the next generation of creative talent.
Supporting the Next Generation of Artists
A major highlight of the month is the Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon, taking place on May 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Sarasota Yacht Club. This year, 10 students from Sarasota and Manatee counties will each receive $5,000 scholarships, totaling $50,000 in support of their artistic education.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the recipients, experience their artwork and performances, and hear firsthand how these scholarships are shaping their futures. The event includes lunch, with advance registration required by May 8.
Celebrating a Sarasota Art Colony Icon
On May 2, Arts Advocates will host a special tribute, “A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Beth Arthur,” at its gallery in the Crossings at Siesta Key. Beth Arthur, now 100 years old, is recognized for her contributions during the peak of the Sarasota Art Colony.
Arthur studied under renowned artists Hilton Leech and Syd Solomon, and her work has been exhibited internationally. She and her daughter will attend this free event, offering a rare opportunity to celebrate a living legend of Sarasota’s art scene.
Go Behind the Scenes at the Van Wezel
Art lovers can experience a unique cultural tour on May 18 with “Behind the Curtain: Exploring the Van Wezel.” Hosted at the iconic Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the guided experience showcases artwork from the Arts Advocates collection alongside stories from the world of live performance.
Guests will explore paintings and sculptures by noted Florida artists before stepping onto the stage for an insider’s look at the venue’s rich history. Proceeds from the tour benefit educational and outreach programs. Arts Advocates has been building strong momentum all year, with recent programming featured in both its March 2026 lineup and its April 2026 event schedule.
Featured Exhibit and Artist Talk: Art Venti
Throughout May, the Arts Advocates Gallery will showcase “The Imagination of Art Venti,” featuring the intricate pencil paintings of Art Venti. Known for his highly detailed, large-scale works, Venti explores environmental and social themes through layered colored pencil techniques.
The exhibit is open Saturdays through May 30, and on May 19, visitors can attend a special artist talk, where Venti will demonstrate his creative process and discuss the inspiration behind his surreal landscapes.
A Hub for Sarasota’s Artistic Legacy
The Arts Advocates Gallery continues to serve as a cultural cornerstone, with permanent collections featuring works from the Sarasota Art Colony and Florida Highwaymen artists. Free docent-led tours are available, offering deeper insight into the region’s rich artistic history.
Founded in 1969, Arts Advocates remains dedicated to preserving Sarasota’s cultural heritage, supporting local arts organizations, and expanding educational opportunities for aspiring artists. Readers looking for continuity with prior coverage can also revisit the organization’s May 2025 lineup to see how its scholarship and outreach work has continued to grow.
