Art Center Sarasota Unveils Four Powerful Summer Exhibitions Celebrating Creativity, Architecture, and Transformation
Summer on Florida’s Suncoast is heating up with a fresh wave of creativity as Art Center Sarasota continues its Centennial Season with four new exhibitions opening May 21 and running through July 31, 2026. The exhibitions showcase a diverse mix of contemporary art, architecture, experimental media, and deeply personal storytelling — reinforcing Sarasota’s long-standing reputation as one of Florida’s premier arts destinations.
A public opening reception will take place Thursday, May 21, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the gallery, located at 707 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. Admission is free.
Four Distinct Exhibitions, One Powerful Cultural Experience
This summer’s lineup offers visitors an immersive look into the evolving world of contemporary art through four unique exhibitions. The program also adds to a busy arts calendar that includes local cultural highlights like Arts Advocates’ May 2026 events in Sarasota and other creative programs across the region.
“Composed” by Anja Palombo
German-born artist Anja Palombo presents “Composed,” a solo exhibition exploring the balance between structure and spontaneity. Using clay, paint, and mixed media, Palombo creates works that feel simultaneously controlled and unpredictable. Her artistic process embraces movement, pressure, texture, and chance, resulting in pieces that invite viewers to look deeper into how materials interact naturally.
Palombo’s international background — including studies in Germany, a BFA from Wayne State University, and decades teaching art in Asia — contributes to the exhibition’s layered and global perspective.
“Designing the Cultural Coast”
Architecture and visual art come together in “Designing the Cultural Coast,” an exhibition celebrating Sarasota’s unique design legacy. Co-curated by preservationist Morris Hylton III, the exhibit features work from noted architects and artists including Carl Abbott, Jerry Sparkman, Victor Lundy, and the Suárez artists.
Visitors will experience paintings, sculptures, architectural models, and drawings that demonstrate how Sarasota’s renowned architectural influence extends beyond buildings and into broader artistic expression. That cultural thread runs deep in the city, from contemporary galleries to landmarks such as the Sarasota Opera House’s 100-year history.
Sarasota has long been recognized internationally for its mid-century modern architectural heritage, often referred to as the “Sarasota School of Architecture,” making this exhibition especially meaningful for local residents and design enthusiasts alike.
“Living by the Water” by Cat Tesla
Cat Tesla brings deeply personal work to the gallery in “Living by the Water.” Inspired by a major health diagnosis and her move to Florida, Tesla’s paintings reflect healing, emotional renewal, and the calming influence of coastal living.
The exhibit features abstract compositions layered with soft colors, shifting light, and textures that mirror the rhythms of the Gulf Coast. Tesla’s unusual journey — from genetic counselor at Emory University to full-time artist — adds another compelling dimension to her work.
“Medium Mutiny”
The juried exhibition “Medium Mutiny” pushes creative boundaries by challenging artists to rethink traditional media. Visitors can expect unconventional materials, experimental techniques, and hybrid artistic forms that blur the line between craft and fine art.
The exhibit is juried by Ed Swan Jr., whose background in craftsmanship, stained glass, and custom furniture design brings a unique perspective to the selection process.
Sarasota’s Arts Scene Continues to Thrive
Founded in 1926, Art Center Sarasota is Sarasota’s oldest visual arts organization and continues to play a major role in the region’s vibrant cultural scene. The nonprofit remains admission-free and focuses on connecting artists and the community through exhibitions, education, and outreach.
The summer exhibitions also highlight why Sarasota consistently ranks among the nation’s top small-city arts destinations. From world-class museums and galleries to architecture, theater, and performing arts, the city continues to attract creatives and visitors from around the world. Local art lovers can also explore events such as the Sarasota Festival of Arts, another example of the area’s strong creative pulse.
