Sarasota Sally- Opa! Opa! Greek Restaurant

Opa! Opa!, Authentic  Greek Restaurant is located at 6525 Superior Ave, Sarasota, 34231, Phone 941-927-1672

Sally has driven past this restaurant several times over the last two years but it never really registered on my places to try until one of my members wrote me an email telling me that this was the very best Greek Restaurant in Sarasota.  Trusting my members, as always, my husband Sam and I decided to give it a try.

Opa Opa Restaurant SarasotaWe were impressed when  we walked in as to how beautiful  the interior was with the gorgeous murals, the large dining area and the open concept kitchen where you can see the chef/owner Yanni and his staff preparing your meals.  After we were seated and our drink orders taken by a very friendly and knowledgeable waitress and her helper (Sybil & Danny) we were delighted by the complimentary Pita bread they put on the tables before you order. Sam was as thrilled with the taste of the bread as I was and we were both tempted to just keep eating it until we were full but common sense prevailed as we perused the menu.

For an appetizer we chose the “Saganaki – Opa! Opa!” which is Goat Cheese Flambeed with Brandy and Lemon served tableside.  Pictures do not do this dish justice.  When the waitress lights this up and the Flames erupt it’s almost like a stage play with the excitement and anticipation that come with the opening music and promises delights to come. After the flames are out and we are able to dive it we find this is as tasty as it looks.

Greek Restaurant Sarasota, FloridaWhen visiting a restaurant for the first time Sally finds it’s a good idea to ask the waitress what she recommends and she directed me to the “Shrimp Santorini”.  Sybil our waitress said this was Chef Yanni’s  favorite and that was enough for me.  When it arrived I found a healthy portion of Shrimp that were baked with fresh tomato, basil, and garlic topped with melted Feta Cheese.  The tastes were sublime and as I ate and looked at the Greek Murals I swear I almost smelled the Mediterranean Sea.  Sam ordered the “Dolmathakia” which consists of Grape Leaves stuffed with Ground Beef, Rice and Greek Herbs.  My husband absolutely enjoyed his meal as he gained membership in the “clean plate club” we always joke about. Some other great dishes we have enjoyed since our first time is my favorite is the Lamb Chops MARINATED IN LEMON AND OLIVE OIL. CHARBROILED AND SEASONED WITH GREEK HERBS and the Tomahawk Ribeyes and Tomahawk Pork.

We decided to try two different desserts so that we could both see how they tasted.  My choice was the homemade “Baklava” which I believe is the best tasting Baklava I have ever had in my whole life.  Sam chose the Flash Fried Feta Cheese in  Phyllo dough which was covered with a honey/fig sauce that was absolutely heaven.  There are many homemade desserts prepared daily for your selection.

Lamb Chops MARINATED IN LEMON AND OLIVE OIL.We were very fortunate to meet the Chef/Owner Yanni Heralampopoulo who is a whirling dervish in the kitchen and his wife Michele who handles the front of the house.  Yanni learned to cook from his Yiyia (grandmother) and his mother in her village in Greece and his passion for preparing fresh, homemade, original Greek recipes is infectious. Yanni’s goal is “for you to leave here feeling like part of our family!”.  Don’t miss out on their Family Style Meal and Wine Parties with fantastic food, great greek wine and LIVE BOUZOUKI MUSIC.  These parties are held several times per year call them at 941-927-1672 to find out the next one.

Congratulations Yanni and Michele, Sarasota Sally will definitely be back for more of your sublime creations.
