The Florida stone crab season runs for 7 months from October 15 – May 15, so today is the last day! Whatever traps that are still out there will be pulled today.
Bob Slicker, GM of the Swordfish Grill & Tiki in Cortez says “their supply is now over. It was a fabulous year with our guest enjoying thousands of pounds of stone crab throughout the season”.
Catching stone crabs in traps is rather interesting. When the crabbers pull the catch from the traps, they break off the claws, which will grow back and then they toss the crabs back into the water.
So, everyone will have to wait until next October when the season opens again to enjoy something very special to our area!
