If you are looking for somewhere different to eat while you are on Anna Maria Island, try the Old Hamburg Schnitzelhaus, 3246 E. Bay Drive, Holmes Beach. They are open Monday –Saturday 5 PM-9 PM. They do take reservations and if you want to dine there during high season, call ahead 941-778-1320.
Not only do they have great German & Austrian food, but the minute you walk in you feel like you’re one of the family. They have a dining room and a bar area that serves dinner as well.
I used to live just a few blocks away from the restaurant and could walk there. But since moving off the island, I just don’t get there as often as I would like. However, the other day, my husband and I decided to make the trek to the island and dine at the Schnitzelhaus. I admit it, it has been over a year since we last visited. So, I was hoping that the quality of food and the wonderful atmosphere that made the restaurant great was still in place. And it was, but better! Both the owners were working that evening. They have a great pride of ownership and talk to guests frequently.
For this dinner, we each ordered a soup for starters. My husband ordered the French Onion Soup and I ordered a cream of mushroom (which was the special that night). The cream of mushroom was thick, flavorful, and had a generous portion of mushrooms. The French Onion soup was flavorful too. The restaurant serves the soup with their warm homemade bread that is too die for. It’s not too heavy and softer than a baguette.
For the main course, I had the Jager Schnitzel (topped with mushroom cream sauce) spätzle & sauerkraut. My husband had the Capern Schnitzel (topped with capers, lemon, and white wine hollandaise sauce) a side salad and roasted potatoes. The schnitzel was cooked perfectly, crisp on the outside and tender inside. The sauerkraut is flavorful and reminds me of a meal I had in Bavaria. The salad dressing is a house vinaigrette made with mustard and a hint of curry.
Save room for dessert! You do not want to leave without ordering the Black Forest Cherry Cake. This cake is light, and the filling is made with this heavenly cream sauce, cherries, and cherry schnapps. They serve a large piece so two can share.
The Old Hamburg Schnitzelhaus also serves great German wines and beer. The food portions are generous, so you will have plenty to bring home and enjoy the next day too!
