Dinner and a Good Laugh at Beulah’s and McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre

When is the last time you have been to McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre?  If you are looking for something different to do, then try it.  McCurdy’s is located downtown at 1923 Ringling Blvd in Sarasota. 

If you are thinking about going for a weekend show, you might want to buy your tickets online at http://www.mccurdyscomedy.com  Most ticket prices run between $20-$30 depending which comic is performing.  You can select your table on their website and pick up the tickets at their will call booth prior to the show. You can grab a bite to eat and a drink there too.

However, since this may be a date night, try one of the restaurants in downtown Sarasota before your show.  This past weekend, my husband and I caught the late show at McCurdy’s which allowed us to enjoy a nice dinner beforehand.  Since downtown Sarasota is easy to walk around, we parked at the movie complex garage on Main Street and walked a couple of blocks to Beulah’s restaurant (1766 Main Street).  Beulah’s was lively with plenty of people sitting at the bar enjoying the last minutes of happy hour.  The restaurant is a casual Italian eatery that serves a nice selection of pasta, wonderful appetizers, and pizza.  We split a sausage pizza and shared two appetizers.  The pizza was a thin crust, with a light tomato sauce that was perfectly seasoned.  We wanted the eggplant roll appetizer but they were already gone.  So, we decided on the Caprese salad and the beef carpaccio.  The service was great and overall the food was delicious.  We didn’t stay for dessert although the menu was tempting. 

After dinner, we walked over to McCurdy’s and had a drink in their green room before the show.  I like hanging out before the show with a cocktail. And they have a generous pour!  When seating is ready, most people line up and you are escorted to your seats.  You will have a dedicated server and there is a two purchase minimum.  That requirement is not hard to fill. They have a good selection of mixed drinks, wines and food. Since we had dinner earlier, we ordered the flourless chocolate torte for dessert.  The torte was served warm, with a raspberry and chocolate sauce. It was so good I could have ordered another.  But we settled for having a glass of red wine instead.  Although the place was full, I really don’t think there is a bad seat in the theatre.  This past Friday, Rita Rudner performed for the entire show. She is quick witted and the majority of her dialogue was about raising her daughter. Rita had the whole room laughing.

I like supporting locally owned businesses and McCurdy’s has been owned by Pam and Les McCurdy for over 30 years.  The comedy theatre hosts some of the best comedians in the industry.  Plus, they support local comedians and offer adult comedy boot camp several times a year for those of you who want to learn more about being funny.  You can check out who’s performing and times on their website.

We get so caught up in our everyday lives and sometimes we all just need a good laugh! If you haven’t been to McCurdy’s in a while, go check it out. I promise it’s worth a laugh or two.
