Thunder by the Bay 2026 Raises $310,000: Sarasota Festival Delivers Record Support for Special Needs Community

| Suncoast Post Staff |

One of the Suncoast’s most anticipated annual events has once again proven that entertainment and community impact go hand in hand. The 28th annual Thunder by the Bay Music & Motors Festival, benefiting Suncoast Charities for Children, delivered one of its most successful years ever, raising an impressive $310,000 to support individuals with special needs and their families across the region.

A Festival That Blends Music, Motors and Mission

Rebranded this year as a Music & Motors Festival, Thunder by the Bay brought together thousands of attendees for a high-energy weekend featuring nationally known acts like Night Ranger, 38 Special, and Montgomery Gentry, along with celebrity bike builder Paul Teutul Jr.

But beyond the music, motorcycles, and festival atmosphere, the true heart of the event lies in its mission, supporting critical services for children, teens, and adults with physical and developmental challenges, as well as those considered at risk. That mission has helped make Thunder By The Bay 2026 one of Sarasota’s signature charitable festivals.

A Growing Legacy of Giving

Executive Director Lucy Nicandri emphasized the importance of community support in reaching this milestone.

Over its 28-year history, Thunder by the Bay has now generated more than $3.3 million in funding, an extraordinary impact that continues to grow each year. This year’s success was fueled by several key drivers.

  • Strong corporate sponsorships
  • A meaningful matching gift from the James M. Doss Charitable Foundation
  • Popular lead-up events like the Sporting Clay Tournament and Taste of Thunder
  • A robust online auction and strong ticket sales

The fundraising momentum builds on years of community support, including the festival’s earlier $204,000 fundraising milestone for Suncoast Charities for Children.

Local Nonprofits Receive Critical Funding

Funds raised from the 2026 festival were distributed to 10 local nonprofit organizations, each providing essential programs and services throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties.

  • Children First, supporting childhood hunger initiatives, crisis funding, and sensory classroom tools
  • Inclusion Revolution, work-readiness kits and assistive tools
  • Loveland Center, adult training programs and community integration
  • Miracle League of Manasota, uniforms for special athletes
  • Oak Park School, communication and sensory support materials
  • Special Olympics Florida, equipment, medals, and Camp Shriver experiences
  • St. Mary Academy, therapy room upgrades and hearing screening tools
  • The Florida Center for Early Childhood, therapy scholarships and family support
  • The Haven, inclusive outdoor fitness installations
  • Venice Challenger Baseball, camp scholarships at Dream Oaks Camp in Bradenton

These funds directly support life-changing services such as developmental and occupational therapies, early childhood mental health care, special education programs, respite care and family advocacy, supported employment and residential services, and adaptive sports and wellness programs. The festival’s long-running impact has been evident since events like the 27th annual Thunder By the Bay Music & Motorcycle Festival helped keep that charitable momentum moving forward.

Honoring the People Behind the Work

  • Volunteers of the Year: Lynn & John Merullo
  • Helping Hand Award: Women’s Council of Realtors Sarasota
  • Behind the Scenes Award: USA Fence
  • Rookie of the Year: Russ Reynolds

Their contributions highlight the grassroots support that continues to drive the festival’s success year after year.
