Hermitage Artist Retreat Secures More Than $450,000 to Support Artists, Education and Free Gulf Coast Programs
The Hermitage Artist Retreat has received more than $450,000 in national, state and regional grants to support artist residencies, arts education and free community programs throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties.
The Manasota Key nonprofit received funding from 11 organizations, including the Florida Department of State’s Division of Arts and Culture, National Endowment for the Arts, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Gulf Coast Community Foundation and Koski Family Foundation.
Grants Support Residencies, Education and Public Programs
The largest award is a $150,000 state grant supporting artist residencies, educational initiatives and programming connected to the Hermitage Greenfield Prize and Hermitage Major Theater Award.
Other major grants include:
- $60,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts for the residency program
- More than $60,000 through Sarasota County’s Tourist Development Cultural/Arts Program
- $50,000 from Gulf Coast Community Foundation
- $50,000 from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County
- $50,000 from the Koski Family Foundation
The Community Foundation grant will also support the 2027 Hermitage Greenfield Prize Weekend, scheduled for April 16–18. The Greenfield Prize Dinner will be held April 18 at Michael’s On East in Sarasota.

Expanding the Hermitage’s Regional Impact
Additional funding from The Exchange, Frank E. Duckwall Foundation, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Manatee Community Foundation and Aaron Copland Fund for Music will help expand programming, improve facilities and support music and multidisciplinary residencies.
“As our programs and collaborations continue to evolve and expand, we are excited to see the impact on audiences throughout our region and beyond,” Hermitage Artistic Director and CEO Andy Sandberg said.
The Hermitage hosts accomplished artists from around the world for residencies at its historic beachfront campus. Fellows develop new work in theater, music, literature, dance, film and visual art while also participating in free public programs, readings, performances and conversations.
