$1 Million Challenge Match Launched in Sarasota County to Support Child Protection and Workforce Housing

| Suncoast Post Staff |

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation and its donors are stepping up in a big way, launching two public challenge matches totaling $1 million to address urgent needs facing children and working families across Sarasota County.

Through a dollar-for-dollar matching initiative, every contribution from the public will be matched by Gulf Coast donors, doubling the impact of community giving. Community members can learn more or contribute through Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

Addressing Critical Needs in a Growing Region

As South Sarasota County continues to experience rapid population growth, local services are feeling the strain. Two areas in particular have reached critical demand: child abuse prevention and treatment services, and affordable workforce housing.

“These projects come at a moment when our community needs them most,” said foundation leadership, noting that donor engagement has been driven by firsthand exposure to the challenges.

The Suncoast Post has covered Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s local impact before, including The Bay Park Conservancy Awarded $150,000 Grant by Gulf Coast Community Foundation and other community-focused efforts across the region.

Expanding Child Protection Services in North Port

The Child Protection Center is planning a major expansion of its Keith D. Monda Family Campus of Healing in North Port. Readers can learn more about the Child Protection Center.

Key highlights include:

  • Gulf Coast Community Foundation committed an initial $250,000 grant.
  • More than 20 donor families contributed another $250,000.
  • A $500,000 challenge match is now in place to raise a total of $1 million.

This expansion will allow CPC to serve more children and families impacted by abuse, offering vital services such as:

  • Trauma-informed therapy
  • Forensic interviews
  • Prevention education programs

With South County growth accelerating, the need for these services continues to rise sharply.

Creating Workforce Housing with Harvest House

The second initiative focuses on housing, one of the Suncoast’s most pressing issues. The Harvest House is developing Lakeview Village, a workforce housing community designed for essential workers. Readers can learn more about Harvest House.

Project details include:

  • 25 energy-efficient apartments
  • Targeting households earning 60–80% of Area Median Income
  • Designed for workers such as teachers, healthcare professionals, social workers, and service industry employees

The funding structure includes a $500,000 total match pool, with $250,000 from Gulf Coast’s Board of Directors and major gifts from the Elsa and Peter Soderberg Charitable Foundation, Bob and Lin Williams, and Kathy and Travis Brown.

Beyond housing, Lakeview Village will also generate ongoing rental income to support Harvest House’s broader mission. The broader housing issue has been on the Suncoast radar for years, including this earlier piece on how to help end the Sarasota and Manatee housing crisis.

A Community-Wide Call to Action

These dual challenge matches highlight the power of early philanthropic leadership to inspire broader community participation.

Every dollar donated:

  • Gets matched
  • Doubles in impact
  • Helps fast-track two critical projects

Community members, businesses, and seasonal residents are encouraged to participate and help close the funding gap. To contribute or learn more, visit the Gulf Coast Community Foundation website.
