Tampa General Hospital Ranked No. 1 in Tampa Bay for 11th Consecutive Year
Tampa General Hospital has once again been named the No. 1 hospital in the Tampa Bay region by U.S. News & World Report, extending a remarkable streak that now spans 11 consecutive years.
The recognition is part of the publication’s 2026–2027 Best Hospitals rankings, which evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Tampa General also placed among the country’s top 50 hospitals in five medical specialties and ranked No. 6 overall in Florida.
The results make Tampa General the highest-ranked hospital on Florida’s west coast and the only Tampa Bay-area hospital to finish among the state’s top 10.

Couris credited the hospital’s physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, employees and volunteers, along with Tampa General’s longstanding academic partnership with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.
Five specialties ranked among nation’s best
Tampa General earned national top-50 rankings in five specialties:
- Gastroenterology and GI Surgery — No. 19
- Obstetrics and Gynecology — No. 21
- Urology — No. 45
- Diabetes and Endocrinology — No. 47
- Pulmonology and Lung Surgery — No. 49
The pulmonology and lung surgery program entered the national top 50 for the first time.
Tampa General was also placed among the country’s top 100 hospitals for cancer care and cardiology, heart and vascular surgery. Its geriatrics and neurology and neurosurgery programs ranked within the top 10% nationally.
Altogether, the hospital received national recognition across nine medical specialties.
New regional specialty rankings
For the 2026–2027 edition, U.S. News introduced regional specialty rankings. Tampa General was named the Tampa Bay region’s top hospital for cardiology, heart and vascular surgery.
Tampa General Rehabilitation Hospital was also ranked the region’s No. 1 rehabilitation hospital.
Beyond the specialty rankings, Tampa General received “High Performing” ratings in 15 procedures and conditions. U.S. News describes High Performing as its highest designation for those individual areas of care.
TGH Crystal River also earned a High Performing rating for knee replacement.
What the rankings measure
U.S. News evaluates hospitals using measures that include risk-adjusted survival rates, preventable complications, patient experience, nursing quality and the availability of advanced clinical services.
The publication examined data from more than 800 million patient records when developing its specialty rankings and procedure-and-condition ratings. Fewer than half of the approximately 4,500 hospitals evaluated received a High Performing designation in even one area of care.
For patients and families, rankings can provide a useful starting point when comparing hospitals—especially when someone is facing a complicated diagnosis, major surgery or specialized treatment. However, a hospital ranking should not replace a discussion with a physician about the patient’s specific medical needs, insurance coverage and treatment options.
Tampa General and USF Health form the region’s primary university-affiliated academic health system. Their partnership combines patient care with medical education, clinical research and the development of new treatments and technologies.
“Having access to clear, quality data is vital,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. He explained that a High Performing designation indicates that a hospital exceeded an established national performance threshold.
Tampa General’s 11-year run as the Tampa Bay region’s top-ranked hospital underscores its continuing role as a destination for complex and specialized care—not only for residents of Tampa and St. Petersburg, but also for patients throughout Florida’s Gulf Coast.
