Southwest Airlines Adds New Routes That Could Boost Travel to the Florida Suncoast

Southwest Airlines is once again expanding its route network, announcing a series of new and returning nonstop flights that could bring thousands of additional visitors to Florida in the coming year.

The airline recently unveiled nine new and returning routes, several of which directly benefit Florida destinations, including Sarasota, Fort Myers, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. The expansion reflects Southwest’s continued focus on leisure travel markets and its strategy of connecting travelers from smaller and mid-sized cities with popular vacation destinations.

New Southwest Routes Serving Florida

Among the newly announced routes are:

  • Buffalo, New York to Miami
  • Indianapolis, Indiana to West Palm Beach
  • Manchester, New Hampshire to Fort Myers
  • Portland, Maine to Fort Myers
  • Providence, Rhode Island to Sarasota-Bradenton
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to West Palm Beach
  • Rochester, New York to Fort Lauderdale

Southwest is also launching a new international route from Nashville to Liberia, Costa Rica, a popular gateway to the country’s Pacific Coast beaches and resorts.

Sarasota Scores Another Important Northeast Connection

One of the biggest wins for the Florida Suncoast is the addition of nonstop service between Providence, Rhode Island, and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ).

The route creates another direct connection between New England and Florida’s Gulf Coast, making it easier for seasonal residents, vacationers, and visiting family members to reach Sarasota without connecting through larger hub airports.

The Providence market has long been a strong source of visitors to Florida, and direct access to SRQ could further strengthen tourism, seasonal housing demand, and local business activity throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties. Southwest already considers Sarasota one of its growing Florida destinations and continues to expand service at SRQ, following other recent moves such as Southwest’s added Sarasota-Bradenton service. The service starts in February 2027, operating once weekly on Saturday.

Fort Myers Continues To Grow

Fort Myers is also a major beneficiary of Southwest’s latest expansion.

The airline will add new nonstop flights from both Manchester, New Hampshire, and Portland, Maine, providing additional access from two of New England’s strongest leisure travel markets.

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) remains one of the busiest airports in the state, serving more than 11 million passengers annually. The airport continues to see strong demand from northern travelers seeking sunshine, beaches, golf, and winter escapes, and the region has already seen record-setting traffic at Southwest Florida International Airport.

For Southwest, Fort Myers remains one of the airline’s most important Florida destinations, particularly during the winter travel season.

First-Ever Nonstop Service To Puerto Rico

While Florida receives much of the attention, one of the most notable additions in the announcement is Columbus, Ohio, to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

According to airline industry reports, the route has never previously been served nonstop, giving travelers in Central Ohio a faster and more convenient option for Caribbean vacations.

Why Southwest Is Expanding Now

The route announcement comes as Southwest continues to evolve its network strategy.

Unlike many legacy airlines that rely heavily on large hub airports, Southwest has traditionally focused on point-to-point service. That approach allows the carrier to identify underserved markets and connect travelers directly to leisure destinations where demand is strongest.

Florida remains one of the airline’s most important states, with service to major destinations including Sarasota, Fort Myers, Tampa, Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, Pensacola, Panama City Beach, and West Palm Beach.

Industry analysts believe Southwest’s latest moves reflect several ongoing trends:

  • Continued growth in leisure travel.
  • Strong demand for Florida vacations.
  • Increased interest in nonstop flights from secondary cities.
  • Expansion of Caribbean and Central American destinations.

More nonstop routes typically translate into:
