Who remembers an infomercial circa 1990 starring Mari Winsor demonstrating (at the time) a revolutionary type of exercise? I recall a woman doing what looked like sit ups and “rolling like a ball” back and forth on a mat and wondering what the heck was this all about.
It was Pilates and these days it is definitely more mainstream than the VHS tapes from 20 years ago.
Pilates is named for its inventor, Joseph Pilates, who happened to be a carpenter and a gymnast. He invented the exercises as a recovery for injured dancers. Many of the moves were inspired by yoga but the two forms of exercise still differ in many ways. Today, you see Pilates classes in gyms and dedicated studios. I was fortunate enough to find a private instructor who teaches one on one. Meet Robin Schetzen, owner of Pilates by Robin.
Robin has been teaching Pilates for 18 years and is certified through Pilates International in Stott Pilates as well as having her TRX certification for the past 12 years. In her own words, she describes her experience as an instructor:
“My personal rewards are being able to help clients individually overcome physical obstacles that prevent them from living a comfortable lifestyle. Pilates by Robin offers workouts designed to strengthen your core, lengthen and eliminate stress from your body. Pilates also teaches body awareness, good posture and flexibility. It will dramatically change the way your body looks, feels and performs. No matter your age or fitness ability, Pilates by Robin offers low impact with high results and the luxury of personal one-on-one training. TO ME PILATES IS A WAY OF LIFE!!!”
Her studio is well equipped with the Reformer; the integral piece for Pilates exercises, the Ladder Barrel, the Pilates chair, a TRX set up, as well as balls, weights and bands. You will have a total body workout that is low impact in a no stress environment.
Robin’s clients come to her to improve their flexibility, gain strength and improve balance. Her primarily over 50+ clientele see results after just a few visits. She says, “When you’re done with a workout, you feel longer, taller”. I can attest to that after just one session with Robin, I felt great. I was a little sore the next day, but that just means I worked some muscles that probably needed it!
You can follow “Pilates by Robin” on Facebook. She can be reached by phone 516-662-9013 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. She is available for private sessions Monday through Friday, 6 am to 4 pm. Her fees are $50 for 45 minutes and $65 for an hour. She will also do a training for two for one hour for $45 per person.
As Robin says, “It’s not just exercise, it’s a way of life.” Give it a try…and you’ll be hooked like I was!
