Nathan Benderson Park Unveils Plans for New $32 Million Sports Complex and Launches Major Fundraising Campaign

The Nathan Benderson Park Conservancy Board of Directors has taken a major step forward in its mission to expand and enhance the park’s world-class offerings. The Board has officially authorized the conception of architectural drawings for a brand-new, state-of-the-art sports facility at Nathan Benderson Park — a project that marks the beginning of a $32 million capital fundraising campaign to make the vision a reality.

“This new sports facility will be a transformative centerpiece for Nathan Benderson Park, significantly elevating our capabilities as a premier athletic and community hub,” said Michael Taaffe, Chair of the Nathan Benderson Park Conservancy Board of Directors. “The approved architectural plans detail a world-class, multi-functional complex that goes far beyond simple expansion. It includes specialized training areas, advanced recovery and therapy spaces for athletes, dedicated meeting rooms for event organizers, and greatly improved spectator amenities. Designed to host elite international and national championships, this facility will help attract major events that drive the regional economy while offering outstanding recreation and wellness opportunities for our local community.”

To lead the fundraising efforts, the Conservancy has appointed board member Louis Kosiba as Development Chair. Kosiba brings an impressive record of executive leadership and civic service to the role. A graduate of the University of Illinois with both a Juris Doctor and MBA, he served nearly 30 years on the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund Board of Trustees, including as Executive Director, overseeing more than $55 billion in assets. Since relocating to Lakewood Ranch in 2017, Kosiba has become an active member of the Nathan Benderson Park Conservancy Board of Trustees and has continued his legacy of public service and financial stewardship.

The planned sports facility aims to meet the increasing demand for high-quality athletic and community spaces in the Sarasota-Manatee region. The $32 million fundraising campaign will seek contributions from private donors, corporations, and philanthropic foundations dedicated to advancing sports, health, and community development.
