In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted businesses across the globe, Erika and Dan Gomillion, owners of the homebuilding company, faced a sobering reality: their commercial construction projects in Cleveland, Ohio were grinding to an alarming halt.
“A lot of our commercial accounts pretty much went dead,” Erika recalls. With uncertainty hovering over them, Dan, always dreaming of warmer weather, contemplated starting anew elsewhere. While businesses were shuttering all around the world, Dan’s fighting spirit wouldn’t let him wave the white flag. He saw Florida’s construction market still had life in it, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the downturn. And so, withheld breath, the couple decided to take a leap of faith.
Within months, Dan relocated to Sarasota to explore opportunities, leaving Erika to manage affairs in Cleveland. “We sold everything—our home, our building and equipment,” Erika said.
Dan swiftly began laying the groundwork for their new venture. The Gomillion family was now physically separated by states. But they were all in this together. And it’s a decision that Erika would soon appreciate. “The quality of life here is just better,” she said of their Sarasota surroundings.

The name “Burning River Builders” pays homage to Cleveland’s infamous river fires, a nod to their roots while pursuing their venture here in Sarasota. And all the while, they make sure not only to do good work, but to do good by their customers. “He’s honest, transparent, and incredibly thorough,” Erika said of her husband and business partner. This dedication has earned them a reputation for reliability and quality, driving their business through referrals and client loyalty.
Looking ahead, Erika and Dan remain grounded in their Midwestern values of hard work and honesty. “That work ethic sets us apart,” Erika said, adding that this foundation continues to guide Burning River Builders as they build relationships and shape communities in Sarasota.
