Siesta Key, Florida- Reopen Beach Road Benefit

| Sande Caplin |

Raffles, buffet, live music…what more can you ask for on Sunday Funday? How about all this fun for a great cause! This Sunday October 16th is a fundraising event to Reopen Beach Road on Siesta Key and to keep Beach Road Public at the Blasé Café on Siesta Key.

Music will start at 5pm with Kettle of Fish, followed by the retro rocker Al Donadi Band, Grateful Dead tribute band Ship of Fools, blues man and songwriter Mike Tozier, as well an All-Star Jam include Callie Chappel, Chris Otto, among others.

Raffles and prizes will be going throughout the night, and Cindy’s famous buffet will include jambalaya, Pasta Cynthia, salad, bread, white wine, pizza and more. The weather is turning to fall and the breezes from Beach Road make for a memorable evening. Buffet is $14 and goes towards the benefit.

All proceeds on the day will go towards the cause of saving Beach Road. This past May, the almost 400 foot stretch of Beach Road between Columbus Blvd. and Avenida Messina on Siesta Key was an issue on the Sarasota County Commission’s Meeting log and they chose to “vacate” public ownership of that portion of Beach Road. The Commission chose to do this in spite of clear language in the Comprehensive Plan prohibiting such moves. County Park Policy 1.1.13 states: “The County shall not vacate road segments on waterfronts along any creek, river, lake bay or gulf access point and shall encourage right-of-way use of these areas for coastal beach and bay access.”

Mike Cosentino, a local Sarasota native and business leader immediately took action to reverse this action and prevent something like this from happening again. Petition gathering, pier parties to raise awareness, a purchase of a property on this strip, and constant and continual legal wrangling amounts to costs that one man shouldn’t have to bear.  So help Mike Cosentino, Siesta Key residents present and future and the tourists that come to enjoy America’s #1 beach by coming this Sunday to the “Reopen Beach Road” benefit at Blasé Café, 5-10.
