Shop Smart: 3 Tips For Responsible Gift-Giving

With the welcome of December, it is officially holiday season. No matter what you choose to celebrate it’s safe to say that the end of the year comes with an influx of expenses. With many Americans doing their biggest shopping during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, some people are already wrapping up their gift shopping for the year. However for most, this means it’s go-time for crossing items off their shopping list.

According to a 2016 report by the National Retail Federation (NRF), the average American planned to spend $935.58 last holiday season — and that number is expected to grow by almost 4% this year.

NRF expects holiday retail sales in November and December – excluding automobiles, gasoline and restaurants – to increase between 3.6 and 4 percent for a potential total of $682 billion.

Sure, our holiday budgets and expenses usually seem overwhelming individually- and they often are. When you see the big picture numbers, it’s baffling. So I pose a question this Holiday season…

If we’re going to spend money – why not try to be mindful about it?

Shop Smart: 3 Tips For Responsible Gift-GivingThere are simple ways to shop responsibly and give back while doing your regular holiday shopping. I’ve narrowed it down to 3 simple tips for responsible gift-giving:

1) Shop local, support small business.

It’s easy to head to big retailers to simplify things, but every time you shop small you are not only building up a local artisan or business owner, you’re helping support the local economy. If each of us spent just $64 on American made goods during our holiday shopping, the result would be about 200,000 new jobs.

2) Use AmazonSmile

Always start your Amazon shopping at smile.amazon.com! Once you’ve selected your charity of choice and shop from smile.amazon.com, a small portion will go to that organization. There are countless charities to choose from for whatever pulls on your heart strings. It requires no work or change in habits other than which URL you start with. Seems small but it adds up over time!

3) Be Eco-friendly

For my fellow hippies out there, consider your eco-friendly options this holiday season. Gift a stylish travel mug or refillable water bottle to encourage less paper and plastic waste. Heading to a party or pot-luck? Bring your dish or bottle of wine in a reusable grocery bag to leave at the house. Use recycled or recyclable gift-wrap or boxes for your gift wrapping.

It’s simple: Consumerism is prevalent this time of year, so let’s try to add Consciousness to it when we can. You can give back this holiday season while doing your regular gift-shopping – just consider these 3 tips for smart shopping.

Happy shopping and Happy Holidays!
