Seven Binge-worthy Shows To Watch Over the Holiday Break
As the holidays have now wound down, we might have more time to sit and unwind in front of a great show. The prevalence of streaming services has brought an avalanche of shows in all genres to our homes. Sometimes it is tough to find just the right show to lean into fully and watch from beginning to end. One of the great things is you don’t have to wait for new episodes on older shows that have all seasons released on streaming services. Here are seven great shows you should consider binge-watching this holiday season.
The Americans (available on Amazon Prime) – This Cold War-era spy drama about married, undercover Soviet agents (Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys) ran for six red-hot seasons on FX. The New York Times’s Alessandra Stanley wrote, “every season gets more complicated and is all the better for it.”
M*A*S*H (available on HULU) – M*A*S*H was a sitcom that started its run on television in 1972—amid heated national discourse about our continued involvement in the Vietnam War. The show, about a mobile Army surgical hospital stationed in Korea during that war, played politics for laughs and leaned into the charming, witty performances from stars Alan Alda and Gary Burghoff during its first few seasons.
Wednesday (available on Netflix) – The Addams Family has been through many iterations, from a TV show in the 60s to popular family films in the 90s to a musical in 2010. The newest take on this timeless kooky family is Wednesday, which centers on a teenage Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega).
Daredevil (available on Netflix) – If the Marvel films and TV shows of the 2000s were an example of how not to tell gritty comic book stories, Daredevil and the new class of Marvel-Netflix shows are the exact opposite – with, perhaps, one yellow-fisted exception. Yes, they are still about superheroes, but these characters are humanized, vulnerable, and a lot more interesting, thanks to it.
The Office (available on Peacock) – This mockumentary focuses on a group of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees as they try to get through a day uninterrupted by the hi-jinx of their immature (and socially unaware) boss, Michael Scott.
Revenge (available on HULU) – Travel to the Hamptons and bask in the glory of wealthy snobs with the good old ABC drama Revenge. The show follows Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) on a journey to avenge her father’s death. Under a new identity, Thorne cozies up to the family responsible for framing her father for an act of terrorism and uses every skill she has to take them and their co-conspirators down one by one.
How I Met Your Mother (available on HULU) – Architect Ted Mosby is unlucky in love but doesn’t mind until his roommate Marshall proposes to his long-time girl, friend Lily. At that moment, Ted decides he needs to find a partner and falls in love with the first woman he sees after making that decision: Robin. Robin does not reciprocate but quickly becomes one of his closest friends. The series tells the tale of how Ted (after many years and many failed relationships) meets the woman he eventually marries.
