June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month: What Suncoast Residents Need to Know

| Angela Naff |

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time when communities across the country come together to raise awareness for brain health and show support for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Here along Florida’s beautiful Suncoast, this month is more than just purple ribbons and social media campaigns. It’s a chance to educate, connect, and uplift the thousands of families in our region facing the realities of memory loss.

Florida has one of the highest populations of seniors in the country, which also means it carries one of the highest burdens of Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 580,000 Floridians are living with Alzheimer’s, and that number is expected to grow. For the Suncoast region, this translates into tens of thousands of caregivers, loved ones, and healthcare professionals navigating the complex emotional and practical challenges associated with this disease.

Brain Awareness Month encourages us not only to support those impacted by Alzheimer’s but also to take proactive steps in maintaining our brain health. Studies show that lifestyle changes—like regular exercise, a healthy diet, social engagement, quality sleep, and ongoing learning—can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Small daily habits, such as taking a walk, playing a memory game, learning a new skill, or engaging in a meaningful conversation, can go a long way in keeping our minds sharp.

Throughout June, events like The Longest Day—an annual Alzheimer’s Association fundraiser held on the summer solstice—honor the strength and resilience of those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Many residents participate by hosting fundraisers, walking in memory of loved ones, or lighting up their neighborhoods in purple to spread awareness.

For those in need of support, education, or simply someone to talk to, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Florida Gulf Coast Chapter is a lifeline. Serving 16 counties, including those along the Suncoast, this organization provides a 24/7 helpline (1-800-272-3900), support groups, educational programming, and individualized care consultations. Their local outreach includes programs like the “Brain Bus,” a mobile resource that brings dementia education and support directly to communities. Whether you’re a caregiver seeking help, someone concerned about memory changes, or just curious about ways to get involved, the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter is an excellent starting point.

Alzheimer’s and dementia may not yet have a cure, but what we do have is a growing community of people committed to care, compassion, and action. Suncoast residents have always shown up for one another in times of need, and this month is a perfect opportunity to continue that tradition.

Whether you attend a local fundraiser, check in on a neighbor caring for a loved one, or simply educate yourself on the early signs of dementia, every act of awareness makes a difference. And remember: caring for our brains is a lifelong journey, not just a June initiative.
