Hurricane Michael slammed the Florida Panhandle as a category 4 hurricane causing massive damage and disruption of services. SunCoast Blood Bank has been asked to help the recovery effort by providing O negative and O positive blood as well as platelets. Those impacted by this historic hurricane are in our thoughts and prayers of us all.
From Jayne F. Giroux, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT at SunCoast- “Blood banks in the path of a major storm collect extra units of blood and platelets before it hits. This storm happened so quickly there was not much time to prepare. The shortages occur once the storm has passed due to cancellations of blood drives, business and school closures and electricity outages. SunCoast stands ready to assist when called upon and relies on the generosity of our community to roll up their sleeves to help other regions in need.” She also said that “we do need red blood cells, but not as badly as we need platelets”
Giroux also mentioned that donors can come into the Suncoast Blood Bank or one of their bloodmobiles to donate. It is always best to make an appointment if you can. Michael’s on East, 212 @. East Ave. in Sarasota will have a bloodmobile on premise from 9-6 on Friday, 10/12/2018.
It’s very important that everyone in our community steps up and donates. Visit the Suncoast Blood Bank website for a list of places where you can donate blood or platelets, www.scbb.org.
