One of my favorite movies of all time is the story about the women’s baseball league during World War II, “A League of Their Own.” There is a famous quote by Tom Hanks, “There’s No Crying in Baseball.” I love baseball and I especially love Spring Training in South Florida, it’s the rite of Spring!

We had a friend visiting here for the week and invited him to a Spring Training baseball game at Lecom Park in Bradenton, Florida. He responded, “the games are meaningless, you don’t know the players and it’s just plain boring”. Well, he could not be more wrong.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are celebrating 50 years in Bradenton! Opening Day at Lecom Park saluted Manatee County for its support over the years. A tribute on the giant video screen celebrating the big fifty and a giveaway to everyone coming to the game was just a part of the celebration. Local dignitaries and former Pirates players were in attendance. Omar Moreno and John Candelaria from the 1979 World Series winning team made appearances. Over in the concession area there was live music by Chad and George. Of course, Pirate Parrot was entertaining the crowd with his antics!

The month of March in Florida is a warm-up for baseball season. It is a great opportunity for baseball fans to see their favorite players up close and personal in smaller fields. There are two spring training leagues, the Grapefruit League in Florida and the Cactus League in Arizona. From Sarasota who hosts the Baltimore Orioles to the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie, a total of 16 teams train in Florida.
